Correa reflexa
A favorite for nectar eating birds.
Correa reflexa is a favourite and just a great plant to have in a local native garden. Occurring in South East Queensland, through eastern NSW, most of Victoria, southern South Australia including Kangaroo Island as well as Eastern Tasmania.
Correa Reflexa grows into a medium to large shrub in sun or part shade. Partly shaded is where it seems to flourish. It has soft green leaves and the underside is light brown with a soft hairy surface. Correa reflexa has bell shape flowers (light green or red) with long stamens and yellow anthers. They flower from mid Autumn to mid Spring.
With its long flowering season it is a staple for nectar eating birds, like the Eastern Spine Bill. This is why I love it so much it brings the nectar eating birds into the garden for 6 months or more. They require tip pruning now and then, but mainly after the flowering period to keep it compact and produce more branches and therefore more flowers.
A beautiful shrub with its pretty bell flowers, a nectar bird favourite, a perfect plant for a biodiverse local native garden on the Peninsula.
