Feature Plant - Cushion Bush

The Designer plant

Leucophta brownii, Cushion Bush has become popular in native and local native gardens in recent years. It's very hardy and naturally shapes itself into a round silver ball creating form giving a strong design element to a garden. It compliments the wilder shaped bushes and grasses planted nearby.

Leucophyta brownii grows on the cliffs and dunes in coastal environments along the south coast of Australia. It's found in sand and rocky soils growing on the cliff edges tolerating strong oceans winds and salty air.

The density of the bush provides good habitat for skinks and blue tongue lizards as they are able to hide easily underneath them. Swamp rats use them too for cover and shade.

When planting Cushion Bush in the garden full sun is what it needs to grow into its full, dense round shape. It flowers in early Summer with 1cm small round globular yellow flowers. It grows up to 70cm -1metre tall, its width up to 1.5 metres. Its densely tangled branches can be pruned if it needs to be shaped, but generally not to much pruning is needed as it naturally shapes itself.

Cushion Bush is a fantastic garden plant for full sun and sandy soil gardens. Planted in groups can create a very styled look, or planted in among other shrubs and especially grasses they are an eye catching feature plant.
